Murder of Jhonatan Torres at Border Crossing: Investigation and Informal Reports

Among some trocheros who frequent the border crossings Informal reports from La Parada, in Villa del Rosario, there is talk that the man who was murdered on Monday night, on the Los Mangos trail and could not be identified, would be Jhonatan Torreswho had been missing since last Friday, October 6.

According to several acquaintances of Torres, he would be the same person who posted on social media over the weekend, trying to establish his whereabouts. One of the characteristics they gave is that he has a tattoo with the word ‘mother’ on the left arm, similar to the one seen on the body that was found by the authorities.

The porters claimed that Jhonatan Torres lived in La Parada and that he worked with them for the last five years, smuggling merchandise through those illegal crossings, which is why they knew him as ‘El Chiva’.

“He was a very happy person, he lived annoying and making jokes, he liked to dance. We never saw him get into any trouble,” commented one of the porters who knew him.

Another trochero pointed out that, “he was a child in a man’s body, he didn’t mess with anyone. He liked to walk around with a radio, listening to and dancing to old salsa.”

Therefore, when Torres’ colleagues realized that he did not return to the place where he was sleeping, they began to search for him without having any clues. It was only until Tuesday morning that they found out about discovery of the body with characteristics similar to those of the man, 50 years old.

The first versions on the trail indicated that ‘The Chiva’ He would have been detained by armed men when he was trying to return to Colombian territory from Venezuela, apparently for refusing to pay the ‘vaccine’ imposed by illegal groups that commit crimes on the border.

“To cross the trail to Venezuela they charge $15,000 per trip; anyone who does not pay that risk being detained for several days and even killed. That around here is very complicated and no authority does anything to stop it,” said another porter who passes through the informal border crossings every day.
