The Crow comic was unique in many ways. It was created in the late 1980s, when superhero stories darkened and began to become adult reading. He was born with the pain of the author James O’Barr, whose lover was killed by a drunk driver. The dark tale of revenge became as famous as the 1994 film version. The current remake does not expect the same. You will forget it before you leave the cinema.
For nineteen-year-old O’Barr, the crow represented sadness, guilt, and regret. Although it was based on the supernatural motif of immortal revenge returning from the grave, like many works inspired by painful reality, it was uncomfortably realistic, influenced by the author’s obsession with the tragedy that ‘ changed his life. He drew the crowbar for a long time without having a contract with a publisher.
me first change directed by Alex Proyas from 1994 was accompanied by turbulent events. Brandon Lee, who played the main character Eric Draven, tragically died on the set, shot by prop film which unfortunately turned out to be nothing. The film was supposed to make this son of action star Bruce Lee famous – and indeed he made him posthumously famous. However, he was killed only with the help of doubles and tricks. He added to the aura of the work with death.
The comic and its first film adaptation are in many ways imperfect, full of emotional resonance, full of darkness, which, although it comes from real pain, does not always guarantee an artistic result just as intense. Despite this, these are gloomy works of praise, responding to the mood of the time, but clearly standing out from the norm.
Proyas’ film followed the dark wave of Hollywood thrillers in the 80s, such as James Cameron’s Terminator or Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. And his future Detroit represented a type that was the same as the comic book Gotham, where the revenge of injustice is even more terrifying and ruthless above Batman. There is no moral code. Just full of rage.
Thirty years later, now an expert in weird Hollywood versions of famous models Rupert Sanders he filmed the new Crow, unfortunately, as the cheapest emo kitsch.
The author first transformed Snow White in fantasy action, then creation a problematic version of the famous Japanese cyberpunk Ghost in the Shell, now trying to strengthen the romance line about lovers who were murdered by the local mobster’s drivers. In addition, he wants to expand the mythology behind the hero returning from the dead and strengthen the bloodiness of his revenge.
But the original straightforward film turned into a strange stump without knowing what it really wants to tell. Czech cinemas will be showing it from Thursday.
The first romance is probably the only thing that works a bit on screen. a musician FKA trees in the role of daughter Shelly and Bill Skarsgård like Eric with a scrawny tattoo, they meet in a drug treatment facility. When they share their few happy moments as refugees and spies, they can be sure. The rest of the film is interesting simply because it was filmed in Prague. So the viewer can follow where the main characters go or which of the more or less famous Czech actors die with great violence.
New Crow wants to be as dark as possible from the start. In the opening scene, Eric as a boy finds his favorite horse in the middle of a muddy landscape tied up in barbed wire. About ten years later, the young man is hiding from the world, from his own traumas and from himself in a treatment center rather than being treated for addiction.
Most of the scenes continue the same way – like a transition clip for a song by some average emo band that wants the darkness to be as dark as possible.
The lovers read Arthur Rimbaud, have sex, get drunk on all kinds of stuff – and that’s still the best part of the movie. The latter tries to make everything from the original Crows even more intense, without the creators realizing that they are already overcoming the edge of kitsch and cliché.
A mob leader would not be scary enough, so he must have demonic powers and speak in a strange voice. Eric always falls into the depths and there he gets lessons about, for example, that his love must be pure to remain immortal. It’s mostly stupid.
A good dark comic drama tends to look different these days. It stands for non-black-and-white characters, complex moral choices, just like that Batman trilogy Christopher Nolan, but also last year’s concept Batman by Matt Reeves.
Nová Vrána draws on time, very simply original works mostly with feeling, energy and emotions. However, none of them can be presented credibly. The heroes walk through the center of Prague, but the New Stage of the National Theater or the Rudolfinum is only the background of the film, which is reminiscent of tired B-series dark fantasy thrillers, such as the -vampire series Underground.
The Czech viewer can enjoy the fact that he has a fairly large role as a killer here Charles the Goodand watch his expressive grimaces in a world of sex that is a little different than he is used to from domestic production. And maybe to Jan Budař they throw their heads, which doesn’t happen much in homework.
The film cannot provide anything more than similar childish pleasures. In his effort to be as “cool” as possible, he is, on the other hand, too childish himself.
When, after an unprecedented murder with the help of sawn-off weapons in the opera, Eric appears before the audience with two severed heads, it perfectly shows the impotence and impotence the consciousness of their creators, who do not know what their character is. dealing with They just randomly, without thinking, use scenes that might look good. And they don’t even look like him. Everything is just for effect.
Instead of an atmospheric story about love and revenge, a weak, tired work was created, which makes up for the lack of emotion with the brutality of the work. The words of the song Disorder by Joy Division, which is on the soundtrack, says more about the hero than the entire two-hour work.
However, Vrána cannot imitate the slow and gradual catchy pace of this new wave song. Although to the contrary, this film seems to be the whole time, as if someone wanted to make a film about a full version of this post-punk or emo rock song. Which is not a good idea.
