Murder in Sweden

Swedish Markus Berglund Angberg was sentenced to life in prison for murder and attempted murder of a man and his son, in the summer of 2018.

Now he is appealing the verdict, reports the Swede Expressen.

Took up the cutlery

On the afternoon of 15 June, the police received an emergency call about the attack in the small Swedish town of Hammerö, outside Karlstad.

The father was at home waiting for his son when Angberg came in through the door. At the same time, the son came home.

Angberg immediately attacked and stabbed the men with a fork and knife, who were also subjected to powerful kicks and blows, writes Expressen.

The son, who was in his 35s, died of his injuries. The cause of death was cuts and stab wounds to the neck, fractures of the skull and internal bleeding.

The father, in his 60s, was life-threateningly injured. However, he managed to escape from the apartment despite his serious injuries.

Witness: – He was proud

Nine minutes after the police were notified of the attack, Angberg was arrested.

He was then outside the apartment and was standing with his hands over his head when the first police patrol arrived.

A witness described in an interrogation that she perceived the killer as “satisfied” after the act.

– I understood that he was proud after handing out kicks and trampling, the witness said, according to Expressen.

The police who came to the place have further testified about the man’s behavior when he was handcuffed and taken away.

– He was emotionally cold and calm. Frighteningly calm. No stress and no panic at all, which you can imagine is normal.

Anchor judgments

On February 4, it became known that Angberg had appealed the verdict.

He admits that he used violence against both a father and a son in 2018, and that the injuries he inflicted on them led to the 35-year-old dying, while the father was critically injured.

– We have appealed as we believe that he should be acquitted because he had not planned to commit the acts. In any case, he believes that it should be a fixed-term sentence, says Angberg’s lawyer, Mari Kilman.

“Markus Berglund Angberg demands that the Court of Appeal acquit him of responsibility for murder and attempted murder and reject the plaintiff’s claim for compensation. In any case, a milder punishment is required », writes Mari Kilman in the appeal that was submitted to the Court of Appeal on Thursday.

Further in the appeal, it also appears that Angberg did not consider himself sane during the incident.

Therefore, he asks, through his defense counsel, that the Court of Appeal obtain a statement from the social services’ legal council, for a forensic psychiatric assessment.

It is not yet decided when the court will decide whether the appeal is approved or rejected.
