Murder at Randall’s Island Shelter: Immigrant Fear & Insecurity

The murder of Dafren Cañizález, 24, has unleashed fear among immigrants residing at the Randall’s Island shelter in Manhattan. Some say that the insecurity inside the shelter makes them feel like they are in a “jail.”

Our reporter Alejandro Condis, from Univision 41, went to the Manhattan Court and found that Moisés Coronado, 27 years old and of Peruvian nationality, was arrested for the crime. He now faces charges of murder and gang assault.

The accused would have chased Dafren Cañizález into the shelter, and managed to corner him with the help of two other subjects, and then stab him with a kitchen knife. The accomplices fled the shelter.

“It’s a prison,” says another Venezuelan immigrant

Under anonymity to protect his life, a Venezuelan immigrant told Univision 41 that in the shelter where the murder happened, half of the people are good and the other are bad.

“No human being has to go through that, because that shit is a prison. There are guards everywhere, but nobody does anything,” he said.

After two months in the shelter, he assures that the “law of the jungle” prevails. “If something happens to you there, do you know what saves you? That you run more than me,” she commented.

Another asylum seeker, of Colombian origin, said that the fight where Dafren Cañizález died began in the dining room and then continued outside. Barely 24 hours after arriving at the shelter, he claims to be traumatized by the bloody reception.

At the door of the shelter they do not check anyone, say the immigrants, a situation that keeps them highly concerned. They point out that anyone could enter with a weapon.

Metal detectors and cameras, the new measures that will be in the shelters

In an appearance given this Monday, Mayor Eric Adams said that they had already thought about putting metal detectors in immigrant shelters, in addition to security cameras.

They also plan to check the criminal records of each asylum seeker and post signs indicating codes of conduct.

Adams regretted the death of the young Venezuelan and stated that the New York Police continue to search for the rest of those responsible. “Security in the shelters is doing an excellent job,” said the mayor, adding that the recent events are isolated and that the suspect was arrested.
