Murcia’s Old Prison “opens” to the city | Radio Murcia

The old building of the Provincial Prison of Murcia, popularly known as the Old Prison, continues with its rehabilitation work. The Murcia City Council has proceeded to the removal of the old metal fences that surrounded it have been removed and the outer walls that separated it from the main building have been demolished, freeing up public spaces which will become squares and landscaped exteriors that will open to the city, according to municipal sources in a statement.

In this regard, the space that surrounds the main building, which has an area of ​​1,322 square meters, has been converted into a pedestrian zone, making this property become a completely permeable building open to the city, through which residents they will be able to travel without architectural barriers.

The aforementioned works are part of phase 1 of the project, which focuses its actions on this access building to the complex, andn which highlights the presence of a coat of arms of the province of Murcia on the access door.

Likewise, Three new pedestrian accesses are being created around the building: one from General Primo de Rivera avenue; another from Torre de la Marquesa street, through the square that will enable in this environment, and another third access from the new square created next to the Post Office building.

The result of the project will be a space open to the city and respectful of the existing architecture, historical memory and the environment: the building will be fully integrated into the urban fabric of Murcia. This action will also value the property, which until now was partially hidden.

In this way, the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, has visited this Thursday the Old Prison, where the work for the recovery of this historic property, cataloged as a Singular Element, “they are progressing at a good pace.”

In this way, the reconstruction of the cornices that were deteriorated has already begun with pieces that have been recovered over the previous months, maintaining the original materials. After the elimination of the architectural barriers, the roofs will be executed, in which the original tiles previously recovered will be incorporated.
