Murat supports executive pause with US Embassy

Mexico City. By registering as a Morena senator, Alejandro Murat Hinojosa supported the decision of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to put on hold the relationship with the embassies of the United States and Canada, since, he said, Mexico is a sovereign country and cannot accept interference in the judicial reform that is being discussed in Congress and that, in his opinion, will allow the administration of justice for the benefit of the majority.

As a former governor of Oaxaca, he said, he was able to see the harmful actions of judges, magistrates and ministers, “by permanently applying, especially in the area of organized crime, a hyper-guaranteed system” that benefits criminals.

“As governor, I had the unfortunate experience of seeing that when someone was arrested in flagrante delicto, with cash and drugs, on a permanent basis, they would make the revolving door open and the criminals would leave. Today we have to have judges who have the capacity to understand that the Constitution must be defended, but the Constitution was made to defend the people of Mexico, and in that sense, the victims must be defended, and today the biggest victim is Mexican society.”

In an interview after the registration process as a member of the Senate, he added: “As long as we cannot understand that the victims and not the criminals should be at the centre of decisions, we will not be able to change the security problems that exist in the country and that will have to do with the discussion of the reform of the judicial power.”

He rejected the idea that the human rights of the judges are violated. Of course not, this is guaranteed, but the human rights of the victims must also be respected. I want to make this very clear and of course I will support any action that allows us, in the last stage of the judicial process that has to do with the reform, to begin to see sentences that are definitive so that those who are harming the people of Mexico remain in jail.”

In this sense, he agreed with President López Obrador, when he decided to pause diplomatic relations with the United States and Canada, especially after the statements of Ambassador Ken Salazar, against judicial reform. “Mexicans throughout history have gained our sovereignty and the citizens have already made a decision that must be respected, which is through a democratic process, where more than 36 million Mexicans voted for a series of proposals that have marked the roadmap for Mexico.

Senator Murat Hinojosa responded that there will not be any regression either. “Eighteen years after the 2012 reform, which was made to the accusatory system, if you look at the graphs they are completely vertical. It means that all the criminals are released. Of course it was a public expedited process, but adjustments must be made and of course from my point of view, the biggest problem has to do with the customary system, where judges analyze the substance over the form, I want to reiterate the substance over the form.”

That is to say, “if someone has an arsenal of weapons in their home, it is not to do good. These are the issues that we have to start discussing face to face with society and there must be changes in the judiciary.” He, as a Morena senator, will promote this reform from the Senate.

Regarding the treatment of the opposition, in the context of Morena lacking three senators for the judicial reform, he said that “it must be made very clear that majorities are built through the policy of dialogue. Of course there will always be dialogue, but the final decision has to do with the popular mandate” of June 2, where the now president-elect, Claudia Sheibaum, obtained more than 36 million votes.

Asked about the fact that after leaving the PRI, he will have to live for six years with the PRI leader, Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, he replied: “I am excited to be able to act with all the political actors who will be in the Senate and the most important thing has nothing to do with people.”

There is, he added, “to deliver for the people of Mexico and give them the results that the people of Mexico expect and of course work hand in hand with the one who is called to be the best president of Mexico, who is Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum,” above Xóchitl Gálvez, a candidate who was in a unfortunately imposed project and the population realizes, not only where the present was, but the best future.

Asked about his relationship with former President Enrique Peña Nieto and whether he knows he will return to Mexico, he replied: “He will always be my friend and the conditions of his return would have to be determined by him.”
