A mural in Tilburg has been voted the most beautiful street art in the world of 2022. An international audience gave the painting the most votes in a selection of works from ten countries.
The work can be seen on a facade of a recycling company on Centaurusweg in Tilburg and bears the name Thick. It depicts a jumping woman in a dress made from plastic waste. Artist duo Niels van Swaemen and Kaspar van Leek were given the opportunity by the owner of the building to make something of it.
They chose to use waste materials that come from the recycling company. The huge mural was applied to the facade from a cherry picker. “We want to show with this artwork that waste does not exist. Every piece of waste can be given a second life,” says Van Leek Broadcasting Brabant.
Opened champagne
People could vote for one hundred nominated murals via a website. Anyone could enter street art for the competition. The election of best mural is organized annually by Street Art Citieswhich is “largest street art community in the world”.
The mural in Tilburg made it to the top 10 and then had to compete against nine other murals from Spain, Argentina and France, among others. Last November was Thick already voted the most beautiful ‘mural’ of that month.
When Van Swaemen and Van Leek heard yesterday afternoon that they had won, they opened the champagne. The past few days have been completely dominated by the election, according to Van Leek.
“We have really been constantly thinking about that competition. We have received so much appreciation, but also sweet messages from people who went to look at our artwork especially as a result of the competition.”
