Homegrown songwriter and producer Múr, real name Madara Murnikova, has released her third studio album – its predecessors are “Under Allure” (2017) and the EP “Nekas ugir nav sajte” (2018), from which many may remember the single “Cherry Trees” “.
At the moment, the 23-year-old young musician can be called “homegrown” quite conditionally – Madara currently lives in London, where she is getting a master’s degree in music production, but before that she studied for four years at the music institute created by Paul McCartney in Liverpool. Therefore, the offer to see and hear Madara live is even more interesting (going on stage at the Finkis concert in November in the VEF Kvartal to perform the joint work “Sevis līvėsti” does not count), which will be possible at the very beginning of 2024 – on January 6, after a break of several years, Mùr again will be in Riga to present the already mentioned mini-album “Disbalanss” in the art and culture space “Per Form” on Vagonu Street. “All the elements indicate that this evening will be special – the atmospheric space, the whirlwind of emotions of the new music, the reunion and the special friends who will join me – all this will combine into a unique experience and hopefully fill us all until the next time we meet, until the next album, ” philosophizes Madara.
During his studies in the British Isles, Madara gained a wide circle of acquaintances among Western musicians, and “Disbalance” was also created with their help. Practically all the new sound material was recorded by the Latvian musician in London, with the participation of producer Daniel Guillermo Sauceda (Daniel Guillermo Sauceda) from Miami, but Múr herself did most of the work. A total of five evocative songs plus an outro (plus two more bonus tracks) featuring Madara’s sultry voice on trumpet. “”Disbalance” is for cold winter evenings, when you want to surrender to darkness for the night,” says Múr.
The strangest thing is that the songs are quite different in terms of mood and even stylistically, but despite this, “Disbalance” holds together very well.
Indie, alternative music, pop – it’s even difficult to give a specific stylistic definition to the album. Each song has a nuance that like an invisible gnat holds the listener in its captivity and, without him even realizing it, makes him listen to it over and over again. The reviewer would crown as No.1 the somewhat mystical song “Arstešės” – indie pop with something from “synth wave”. No. 2 – “Stāvam klusi” reminiscent of Agnes Rakovska’s repertoire and textually painful, No. 3 – “Tu mani turi” that is easy and friendly to radio stations (the guitar also sounds strongly here), but perhaps the “Puzle” endowed with a catchy chorus, although the elegant pop title song can also claim the podium. The only minus of this work – like a mini-album, it is too short, you don’t have time to really start listening when it’s already over.
