Munnar Land Encroachment Controversy: District Collector’s Response and Eviction Updates

Idukki: Idukki District Collector Sheeba George said that no one has been assured that the encroachment in Munnar will be stopped. The collector also stated that the mission will continue. Sheeba George’s reaction came after CPM District Secretary CV Varghese said that the district collector has assured that the eviction process will be stopped.

The Collector also stated that he cannot give any assurance regarding the matter which is under court observation. CV Varghese said that the eviction was an isolated incident as per the court order. CV Varghese’s claim was that the district collector had been apprised of the matter and the collector had assured him that no eviction proceedings would be initiated anywhere else in the area.

The eviction was due to government land encroachment and cardamom cultivation in Anayirangal-Chinnaknal area. Five acres of encroached land in Chinnakanal was vacated. The team led by Tehsildar started the evacuation process in the morning.

Earlier, former minister MM Mani had also come out against the eviction of the encroachment. The party’s position is that action should be taken only after consultations on the matter. “Don’t call those who migrated to Munnar as encroachers. Don’t evict the cultivators who own fair land in Munnar. Those who received notices to vacate the encroachment had to go to court if their land was legal. The mission team should be prepared to bury the canceled title before vacating the encroachment. Other measures are pure nonsense’ – Mani said.
