The hostilities in the Commission of Inquiry have a political explanation: nervousness is rising now that the political section is starting. The committee has so far focused on the pollution itself, in the coming weeks it will mainly be about political responsibility.
Then it is not surprising that both CD&V and N-VA are critical of the Zwijndrecht municipal council. Their politicians in particular – Joke Schauvliege as the former environment minister and Ben Weyts as the ex-mobility minister – will once again draw all the attention to themselves in the following sessions, by asking whether they could have intervened earlier. But actually it will be unpleasant days for all parties that were in the previous Flemish government – including Open VLD – or the Antwerp College of Aldermen.
