Municipality of La Florida and Delegation prohibit use of area affected by fire in Campamento Dignidad | National

The Municipality of La Florida and the Presidential Delegation of Santiago agreed on a set of preliminary measures to respond to the needs of the families who live in Campamento Dignidad, after the fire that destroyed nearly 50 homes this Tuesday, November 12.

According to the municipality, this settlement, established illegally in 2020, is under a decree of uninhabitability due to flood risk since March of this year.

The mayor of Florida, Rodolfo Carterand the presidential delegate, Gonzalo Durandiscussed the measures in a meeting that lasted almost two hours. The objective, Carter said, is to implement actions that protect affected families, a total of 78 people.

Among the resolutions, the prohibition of new housing installations in the area damaged by the fire stands out. “The burned area will be prohibited for new installations of precarious housing; in case of insistence, They will be evicted by Carabineros“, indicated the municipal agreement.

Furthermore, the Presidential Delegation committed to explore five alternative sites to relocate 147 families living in higher risk areas. “We hope that between now and Friday they can fulfill their commitment to tell us where these people can be moved,” Carter said.

Durán will also visit land on Rupanco Street and Valentina Lepe Street, belonging to the Ministry of Public Works (MOP), to evaluate their viability as places for temporary relocation.

Cadastre of families in Campamento Dignidad

The meeting also resolved to carry out a exhaustive registry of the 147 families of stage 1 of Camp Dignidadcrossing this information with the families affected by the fire. This measure seeks to prioritize the temporary transfer of those who are in the most vulnerable situation.

Mayor Carter expressed his concern about the delay in the government response to this problem, which has already registered six fires. “The sixth fire had to occur, the most serious, with 50 houses burnedso that the Government authority appeared saying that it wanted to install a new work table,” he expressed.

Carter emphasized the urgency of taking effective actions to prevent future tragedies. “We are not willing that tomorrow there will be 10, 20 or 30 deaths and people will wonder: in four years why was nothing done? The government has run out of time,” he said.

According to municipal records, the Toma Dignidad was formed on land adjacent to the Quebrada de Macul, a high-risk area that was devastated by a landslide in 1993. The sector currently houses more than 750 families.

In March, the municipality declared the sector uninhabitable and requested the intervention of public forces to avoid tragedies associated with climate risks and fires.

“Enough of words, the time has come for, with concrete decisions, this situation to end,” concluded the Mayor.
