The heavy rain, combined with recent work by a Public Utility Agency crew, led to the subsidence of the pavement, resulting in a parked car being swept away.
The competent services of the Civil Protection, the Municipal Police and the Road Construction Directorate of the Municipality of Athens reacted immediately. The area was demarcated for the safety of citizens and vehicles, while there was immediate communication with the company that carried out the work, in order to proceed with the compensation of the owner of the vehicle that suffered damage.
The Municipality of Athens has already recorded and monitors through a GIS map about 200 points in the city that frequently experience flooding. Continuous surveillance of these areas is critical to prevent and promptly respond to similar incidents. The use of modern technologies, such as drones, as well as regular on-site checks by the Municipal Police, contribute to the continuous monitoring of the situation.
At the same time, the Municipality of Athens continues the intensive cleaning of the city’s wells. Since the beginning of the year, more than 14,700 wells have been cleaned, and this work continues every day in all municipal communities, helping to prevent further problems and protect citizens from severe weather.
