Because of the corona crisis, the federal government is making more money available for Hartz IV social spending. The district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald is therefore lowering the district levy that it levies from the communities.

The 50 municipalities in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district will have to pay over 7 million euros less in the current budget to the district.

With a supplementary budget, the district council decided to lower the assessment rate for the district levy by two to 33.8 percentage points. This will save the municipalities around 7.4 million euros. This is made possible by special payments that the district receives from the federal government due to the corona pandemic in order to cover expenses for basic security and thus also for Hartz IV benefits. In addition, the district needs less expenditure on integration assistance.

In 2021, the district levy should increase again

The savings will be passed on in full to the municipalities, which will have to reckon with lower tax revenues and at the same time increased expenses as a result of the corona pandemic in the current year.

For the next financial year 2021, the district administration is proposing a higher rate of assessment of over 35.8 percentage points, with which the district should participate in the municipalities’ total tax burden. The district council will make a decision on this when it is expected to approve the budget for 2021 shortly before Christmas.
