Municipalities – Mülheim an der Ruhr – Ex-Minister Griefahn should be OB candidate in Mülheim – politics

Mülheim / Ruhr (dpa) – The former environment minister of Lower Saxony, Monika Griefahn, is to become a candidate for the mayor in her hometown of Mülheim. The 65-year-old was proposed by the board of the Mülheim SPD for this. “We are convinced that in Monika Griefahn we have an outstanding mayor candidate with nationwide and international experience and networking,” said the chairman of the Mülheim SPD, Rodion Bakum, according to a statement on Tuesday. Griefahn was nominated unanimously. A party congress decides on the proposal of the Mülheim SPD executive committee.

Greenpeace founding member Griefahn was Environment Minister in Lower Saxony from 1990 to 1998, then a member of the SPD Bundestag until 2009. She was born in Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1954.

“I am returning to my roots after many years with exciting tasks, especially since I was always connected to Mülheim through my parents and the family of my son-in-law over the years”, said Griefahn about the nomination. “Mülheim has great innovative potential, which I would like to develop further in the coming years.”

The incumbent Mayor of Mülheim is Ulrich Scholten (SPD). In September there are local elections in NRW.
