Freiburg (dpa) – The city of Freiburg is going one step further when it comes to job offers in terms of gender – and will in future use the addition (a) for “all” in job advertisements. In addition, she only writes the job title in the female form, as the Baden municipality announced on Thursday. For example, we are looking for: Surveying engineer (a).
All people – regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, origin or religion – should feel directly addressed in this way, it said. Instead of such criteria, what counted for the city administration was talent, ability and commitment. “The countless, individual differences in a diverse society are an enrichment and should not only be taken into account, but also actively promoted by us in the future,” explained Mayor Martin Horn (independent). A colorful city also includes a colorful city administration.
The city justified the fact that only the female job title is mentioned with the fact that the male form still dominates in German job advertisements. “We are setting a visible sign here for the self-evidence of equality for all,” said Horn. “By consciously using a linguistic eye-catcher to break up solidified stereotypes.”
The city, which has around 230,300 inhabitants, says it has been using “diversity-compliant” forms of address in tenders since 2018. The addition in brackets (f/m/d) was followed in 2019 by the so-called gender gap, i.e. an underscore as in the word “teacher”.
