Ecologists are able to win several major cities in the second round of municipal on June 28, and thereby take a major step forward in their history.
The Greens have undeniably earned their bet on the eve of the first round on march 15, performing in the urban centres of scores ever seen for a party hitherto confined to supporting roles at the local level, behind the socialists.
Either by taking the head of a union more or less complete (Toulouse, Grenoble, Bordeaux, Besançon) or by providing a list of stand-alone (Lyon, Lille, Strasbourg), EELV has emerged as the force the most dynamic on the left, even if the PS and the PCF have shown a great resistance.

The performance was boosted by “unprecedented visibility of environmental issues” in the campaign, notes a study of teacher-researchers at Sciences Po Grenoble Florent Gougou and Simon Persico for the Foundation of political ecology. However, EELV is going to have to redo arise these issues after the interruption of three months due to the crisis of the coronavirus, which has given the first role to the incumbent mayor. Overview of the large cities of France where the Greens could be imposed on the second round.
Grégory Doucet favorite in Lyon
The Greens are they going to seize the capital of the Gauls ? In Lyon, the ballot is double, municipal and metropolitan, and the second round opposes three main camps : the environmentalists allied with the left and extreme left ; the coalition formed by LR and Gérard Collomb ; and dissidents of LREM. After his big score on the city on 15 march, except in complete reversal of the voters, the candidate EELV Grégory Doucet is the favorite to be the next mayor, to the point that his potential executive has already leaked to the local press.

“A health crisis can lead to reflexes conservatives, and there are conservative opponents”, admits yet Grégory Doucet, arrived in head in march last year with 28.5% of the vote. “There is a real political work to explain that the health crisis is the symptom of a more general crisis”, he says.
Then, the national secretary of EELV Julien Bayou repeat interview after interview that “it is an ecological crisis which comes from the living, and has been exacerbated by the trade in tense flow and short-term profitability”.
In Strasbourg and Bordeaux, victims of the covenant LREM-LR ?
Jeanne Barseghian, which has largely outstripped its competitors in Strasbourg, with nearly 28 per cent, stated : “The aspirations green are reinforced with the health crisis, the closure of the markets was a very bad experience, it was difficult to provide fresh produce and there is therefore a desire to consume local, organic, healthy”.

But the crisis has also perhaps had the unfortunate consequence for the environmentalists to allow time for the alliances between the right and LREM to build, real obstacles in the conquest of the city councils. Jeanne Barseghian in may be the victim of the most obvious, she says the “shock” that represented the covenant, “a 15-minute filing of lists”, between Alain Fontanel (LREM) and the candidate of the Republicans.
In the absence of an agreement with the former mayor and candidate for PS Catherine Trautmann, it is no longer a clear favorite to win. “It was necessary to do everything to prevent the victory of the environmentalists”, plague-t-it.
In Bordeaux, this was to be a quadrangular after 73 years of elections of mayors of the right in the first round. There will finally be three lists : the outgoing mayor LR, the Macron-compatible Nicolas Florian, has made an alliance with the candidate On Thomas Cazenave, the list of which was gathered 12,69% in the first round. This is not a lot for a presidential party, but enough to give a little oxygen to the heir of Alain Juppé, the list of which had outstripped that of 96 votes ecologist Peter Hurmic ally to the left (34,56% against 34,38%).

Florian and Cazenave today that 80% of their programs overlap and invoke the health crisis to explain this alliance, while the Green of 65 years, that seat for 25 years in the municipal opposition, can hope to gather largely of environmentalists to the left. But not all of the left, because the score in the first round (11,77%) of the list “anti-capitalist” NPA-Philippe Poutou has allowed the former presidential candidate to maintain and even hope to become a city councillor, what would be his first elective office at the age of 53.
In Lille, the right is the dam
In Lille, three candidates qualified : Martine Aubry, mayor PS since 2001, came top in the first round (29.8 per cent), ahead of its ally of the administration, the environmentalist Stéphane Baly (24,5%), and his ex-chief of staff Violette Spillebout (17,5%), partially in the colors of the presidential party.

While the Greens had left raises doubts about their real intentions, Martine Aubry and Stéphane Baly have finally announced that they would not make alliance. According to Pierre Mathiot, director of the Institute of Political Studies of Lille, this election “is probably the election of the least insured for” Martine Aubry.
This last was received Thursday evening, the support of the right of lille, which has called for a dam to Greens, termed “mad,” of”extremists” and”eco-marxist”. Violette Spillebout, who has returned to his post of executive officer to the station, will leave only after having refused an alliance with the right-hand (8.2 per cent).
In Grenoble, Eric Piolle, promised to a second term
The head of the list EELV-FI-PCF-citizens finish well in the lead (46,68%) in the first round, Eric Piolle seems promised to a second consecutive term in the one great city is currently managed by environmentalists. The failure of all attempts to merge lists has entered the quadrangular which should be as favourable as in 2014.

Its three competitors are campaigning to position themselves as the first opponent. Second in the first round with 19,81% and the support of LR, the former mayor RPR to the city, convicted of corruption in 1996, Alain Carignon a series of “e-discussions” and calls for “vote”. With its 13,75% of the first round, Emily Chalas (LREM) has received the support of Act (the right constructive). Snapped the shot more to the right of the chessboard, she caresses the hope to hone Carignon.
Finally, the socialist Olivier Noblecourt (13,31%), 4th in the evening of the first round, ends its campaign with visio-debate, despite the refusal of the alliance net and no call from the list Piolle.
In Toulouse, all left behind Antoine Maurice
In the rose city, Antoine Maurice, who with 27.5% close on the heels of the outgoing RL, Jean-Luc Moudenc, has benefited from the rallying of the PS, the PCF and of Generations to complete its alliance with BIA in an “Archipelago of the citizen”.
Uncertainty in Marseille
In Marseille, the official candidate of EELV Sébastien Barles pulled up behind the union of the left, worn by… the ecologist Michele Rubirola, came top in march, and which has serious chances to overthrow the heir of Jean-Claude Gaudin, Martine Vassal (LR). The list of Union worn by Michèle Rubirola, the Spring in marseille, it is carried by its score in the first round, even in the boroughs, the strongholds of the right.

After the election, however, remains more uncertain than ever in the phocean city, the stronghold of the Republicans, led by Jean-Claude Gaudin for the past 25 years. The campaign is in a panic in mid-June, with the opening of an investigation on the possible fraud to proxy for The Republicans, who increased the difficulties of Martine Vassal, for a long time given favorite. The president of the metropolis and of the department, who defends himself of having cheated, is now employs to dispel the doubt and counter-attack by agitating the spectrum of the “red peril”.
The name of the mayor of Marseille may not be known as the “third round”, when a majority shall be released to the municipal council for the elect. The national Gathering of Stéphane Ravier, only to have been able to keep up in all sectors, and the outsiders Samia Ghali or Bruno Gilles (dissenting LR) could play a key role.
