Municipal day: municipalities under financial pressure like seldom – Baden-Württemberg

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – In the shadow of the rising Corona values and a few days before the important budget debate, hundreds of Baden-Württemberg town hall chiefs come together in Stuttgart to reaffirm their expectations of state politics. The municipalities are under pressure, warned the President of the Municipal Assembly, Steffen Jäger, in the run-up to the so-called municipal political rally on Monday in Stuttgart (10 a.m.). “The municipalities are being challenged financially like seldom before,” he said.

Because regardless of whether it is about the corona pandemic, the latest figures on the need to expand all-day primary schools, education, climate protection and transport – the municipalities refer to the state’s cash position and responsibility. The statements of the Baden-Württemberg Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), who has been confronted with the demands of the community assembly for months, are therefore eagerly awaited. It is still unclear how much the government will give cities and municipalities financial support in the coming year.

Because after the new green-black government had decided on further corona aid for the municipalities in the supplementary budget, there is still little in the draft for the 2022 budget about new financial aid. Both sides first want to see how the November tax estimate for municipalities and the state will be and prioritize the numerous topics of the municipalities. However, the President of the Municipal Assembly, Jäger, has repeatedly emphasized that this is not the sole responsibility of the municipalities.

The town hall chiefs of small and medium-sized towns and communities as well as guests of honor from politics, business and society meet every two years for the local political rally and the general assembly of the community day. The municipal day is the largest municipal state association. It represents the interests of its members – cities and municipalities belonging to the district – vis-à-vis the state. The basis for this is the municipalities’ right to participate guaranteed in the state constitution.
