Municipal Councils Unite to Oppose NMBS Measures: Motion Sent to Minister of Mobility and NMBS Boss

In Lokeren, the almost entire municipal council has adopted a motion requesting that the NMBS measure be withdrawn or adjusted. This motion is sent to Minister of Mobility Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo) and NMBS boss Sophie Dutordoir. “We do not want empty stations, but rather a versatile service that responds to the needs of travelers,” says municipal councilor Ron Van Kersschaver (Vooruit).

“I note that the NMBS continues to reduce services and staff in its stations, without an alternative. Even in Ghent Sint-Pieters, the busiest station in Flanders,” says Joris Vandenbroucke (Vooruit), parliamentary group leader and municipal councilor in Ghent. He receives support from Senate President Stephanie D’Hose (Open VLD), Senator Fourat Ben Chikha (Green) and Flemish Member of Parliament Stijn De Roo (CD&V). Next week, the Ghent city council will vote on a motion addressed to the NMBS to Minister of Mobility Gilkinet.

There were also protests against the NMBS plans in Aalst and Waregem, among others.
