Municipal Archives of Auxonne to be Transferred to Departmental Archives in Dijon: A Big Project for Historical Preservation

It’s a big project that awaits the municipal archives of Auxonne. Currently kept in the Octroi office, they will soon join the departmental archives of Côte-d’Or, in Dijon. A deliberation to this effect was taken during the last meeting of the municipal council, Tuesday September 26.

A part of the history of the town since the 13th century

“We have a lot of archives which are more than substantial in this building,” recalled the mayor, Jacques-François Coiquil. “It is therefore important today to call on the services of the Côte-d’Or departmental archives so that they benefit from conservation, but also, for some of them, from digitization [afin qu’elles soient accessibles] to as many people as possible »

In total, more than 300 linear meters of documents will find refuge in the departmental archives. They are grouped into four major eras. First of all, there is the old collection, going from the 13th century to the Revolution, which alone represents 25 linear meters and 139 bundles. This is little in demand, its consultation being complicated due to handwriting in old French. Furthermore, this old fund has not been inventoried. For the other three lots, smaller, there are the archives which go from the Revolution to the beginning of the 20th century, those from the 1920s to 1983 and the contemporary ones, going from 1983 to today.

Better conservation and space saving

The first councilor also specified that “today, the archives are rather put in cardboard boxes and are stored on top of each other. So this approach will make room, but also preserve these documents. An agreement is therefore proposed to authorize this transfer. The departmental archives have been offering us this service for some time and it is a very good thing, because they are much better equipped than us to preserve them. Furthermore, even if the archives are stored and managed there, it is free and we remain the owners.”

The City joins the European Federation of Napoleonic Cities

This meeting of the municipal council was also an opportunity to validate the membership of the City of Auxonne to the European Federation of Napoleonic Cities. The mayor, Jacques-François Coiquil, explained that “this membership allows us to open up even more compared to the imperial cities, which are more French. This federation has many more European cities. This is therefore entirely within the framework of the exchanges in which the college sports unit or the Erasmus exchanges which will be discussed this year with the new head of the college can participate.

This structure aims to bring together European cities whose history has been marked by Napoleonic influence around three orientations. The first being to encourage exchanges, with the organization of meetings, conferences or publications in relation with universities, cultural institutions and historical associations. This also makes it possible to promote and support actions for the conservation and restoration of Napoleonic heritage. Finally, it helps to develop activities to promote and promote heritage with, for example, exhibitions, cultural events, etc. The annual contribution of the municipality to join this federation amounts to €985

And also – Creation of a digital advisor position

In order to develop the Digital Public Space (EPN) within the future Maison France services, the elected representatives of the Auxonne municipal council took a deliberation aimed at creating a permanent job of digital advisor. This will make it possible to meet the needs linked to e-administration, access to rights and support for the public in dematerialized procedures with different organizations such as the prefecture, La Poste or even the CPAM (Primary Fund health insurance).
