Munich’s cinema at the Olympiasee is starting the 2023 season with a spectacular novelty. An LED wall now enables open-air cinema during the day. Up to four films per day are possible! An Eberhofer festival is also planned.

So if that’s not a good sign: Just in time for the presentation of the new, 84 square meter cinema LED wall, the sun was shining over Munich yesterday. Just push the clouds away, a scrap of blue sky flashes through the grey. And despite this brightness during the day, which is now completely unfamiliar to us, you can see the trailer for “Kino am Olympiasee”, which starts tomorrow, pin sharp and with accurate colors.

The organizers have high hopes for this LED wall, over which a 3D-capable screen of the same size can be rolled in the evening. Up to 350 films are to be screened here on around 120 days in the 2023 season: In the afternoon, the open-air cinema invites you to the first screening from 4 p.m., there will be a break before the evening before the main program begins around 9 p.m. On weekends, public holidays or during the holidays, the cinema even opens at 1 p.m. for its family programme.

Munich wants to offer Germany’s largest open-air cinema

“We want to become Germany’s largest open-air cinema,” explains Christian Pfeil, but he’s not satisfied with that. The operator of Munich cinemas such as the Rio, Arena and Monopol is curating the program for this summer for the first time. “And for that we need 80,000 guests.” At “Kino am Olympiasee” they should meet a colorful “fairground made of films”, as Reinhard Strasser, one of the organizers, cheerfully describes it.

The program will be very diverse, Pfeil promises: from “Super Mario Bros.” to the brand new “Fast & Furious 10”, from children’s films to art house, from blockbusters that you may have missed in 2022 or want to see again, to 3D hits like “Avatar: The Way of Water” – everything in, everything on. And for fans: around 20 percent of the films should be shown in the original English. Despite inflation and general price increases, ticket prices can be maintained. For example, the “Family Open Air Ticket” costs eight euros as before. Good news.

A festival just for the cult Franz Eberhofer

Anyone who loves the cult Eberhofer thrillers should mark the days at the end of July and the beginning of August in their calendars: There should be an Eberhofer festival! From July 30th, a filmed Rita Falk thriller will be shown daily in the early evening program, with a star on the stage (which is also new, by the way!) chatting in advance. The festival ends with the premiere of the new, meanwhile tenth adventure “Rehragout Rendezvous” on August 7th – three days before the official cinema premiere!

A visit to the cinema would be nothing without small feeders and suitable drinks. Of course there is also – in the new beer garden with its jungle bar. The beer garden is only open to cinema-goers. However, if you have a ticket for the 9 p.m. performance, you can take a seat here in advance to spoil your taste buds with delicacies such as vegan bowls or burgers. In addition perhaps a cocktail or a spritzer, a good wine – everything is served with pleasure.

The popular “experience packages” for cinema tickets are also being offered again this year! Then there is the romantic “Date Package”. It contains the loveseats – two seats without armrests to snuggle together –, a bottle of Prosecco Rosé, the giant bucket of popcorn, nachos and a cozy blanket to take away. Speaking of blankets. If you don’t want to sit on one of the many deckchairs – they are numbered by the way – you can also make yourself comfortable on the lawn. Either he brings his own pad for the picnic cinema – or you rent one.

The only hope left is that Petrus is a movie fan and will bring us many mild summer days and nights. But even if it sends a shower here and there to cool off – there are also umbrellas.
