In a ranking that deals with various economic factors, Munich is again at the top. But other major Bavarian cities also do well.
For the Institut der Deutschen Wirtschaft (IW), Munich, Erlangen and Ingolstadt are the top trio of major German cities. In terms of location quality and economic strength, Munich has defended its top position for the ninth time in a row. The city is the “stronghold of the DAX companies” and guarantees “high-paying jobs”. In addition, the real estate market is flourishing.
And Regensburg also made it into the top ten, as announced on Thursday by ImmoScout24 and “Wirtschaftswoche”, which commissioned the study. The other major Bavarian cities were also in the top third in a comparison of all 71 major German cities: Würzburg in 13th place, followed by Nuremberg (20), Fürth (21) and Augsburg in 25th place. The economic structure, quality of life and real estate market of the big cities under the microscope.
But if you look at the changes in the last five years, it looks very different in Bavaria: Regensburg and Ingolstadt are among the last ten nationwide in the dynamic ranking. Ingolstadt is even the biggest loser with a drop from 33rd place to 66th place. “Above all, car regions such as Ingolstadt and Dingolfing recorded high drops in trade tax,” explained the study authors. According to this, Ingolstadt only achieved 67th place among all major German cities in the municipal tax force.
City ranking: Munich slips sharply in one category
Erlangen made it to 7th place in the dynamic ranking, Munich slipped from 1 to 10th place. Nuremberg and Augsburg follow in 12th and 15th place, while Würzburg is in the midfield with 37th place. The metropolises have lost a lot of their attractiveness due to the closure of culture and gastronomy in the pandemic. “People are increasingly drawn to the surrounding area and to small to medium-sized cities, which are particularly impressive with their green spaces, a high quality of life and a good infrastructure,” said ImmoScout24 managing director Ralf Weitz.
In terms of sustainability in terms of ecology, economy and social issues, the Bavarian cities of Erlangen and Ingolstadt were the best, after the front runner Wolfsburg, with 2nd and 3rd place. Regensburg and Munich followed in 10th and 13th place. Würzburg, Fürth and Augsburg also placed in the upper midfield, Nuremberg only came in 50th place.
