Munich today – news from 02/05/2021 – Munich

Hardly anything has been going on as usual in schools since mid-December. Because of the pandemic, the start of the Christmas holidays was brought forward for most of the schoolchildren, and since February 1, some of the graduating classes have been allowed back into the classrooms, but most children and young people are still sitting at home: in children’s rooms, under sloping ceilings, in kitchens – or living room tables, they try to get ahead in math, German, English, physics and everything else they are supposed to learn.

What does all of this look like after all these weeks? My colleague Catherina Hess, herself the mother of a twelve-year-old son, used her camera to find answers to this question. Many families have opened their doors for her and provided insights into everyday life in this very special school year. The photos that were taken show what school 2021 means above all: improvise.

On her forays, however, Catherina Hess didn’t just collect photos. She also learned how the children and parents are doing. Your impression: Most of them are above all exhausted, emaciated by the constant exceptional situation, burdened by being together for a long time. What most people want most of all: Holidays, time to take a deep breath.

If you too are plagued by homeschooling or home office, I wish you that with all my heart this weekend! Next week there should be signals when the exceptional period could end.
