The city of Munich is taking legal action against the organizers of an “Oktoberfest” planned in Dubai. Under the motto “Oktoberfest goes Dubai”, the inaccurate impression is created that Oktoberfest is moving to Dubai this year after another corona-related cancellation in Munich, the city’s economic department announced on Wednesday. This is exactly what the organizers aimed at when they referred to the term “Oktoberfest”. The city is therefore demanding a cease and desist declaration from the organizers in which they agree not to advertise their planned event with the real Oktoberfest Munich.
The organizers specifically used the association with the real Munich Oktoberfest, explained the city further. The success of this strategy is documented by a large number of reports in the media. It looks as if the Munich Oktoberfest 2021 will be held in Dubai as an alternative or as if it had been brought into the desert by the Emirate of Dubai as a whole.
“From the point of view of the state capital Munich, it is frightening that third parties are taking the rejection as an opportunity to enrich themselves by exploiting the worldwide good reputation of the Oktoberfest and suggesting that there is a connection between the original and the event in Dubai,” said the Munich economics officer and Wiesn boss Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU).
“It is therefore in the public interest that the city takes legal action against such unfair and illegal behavior. The aim of our legal procedure is to protect the good reputation of the Munich Oktoberfest worldwide,” Baumgärtner continued. The Wiesn is a cultural asset that has been cultivated for over 200 years. The city is organizing this “unmistakable festival” with high financial and organizational effort and will do everything to protect the Oktoberfest as a unique and originally Munich event.
The Oktoberfest on Theresienwiese cannot take place for the second time in a row this year due to the corona pandemic. This was announced by the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) and Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) on May 3rd. The decision has far-reaching economic consequences for the city.
