Munich is an expensive place. No wonder that by no means everyone who works here also lives in Munich. This makes Munich a commuter stronghold.

Munich – Germany’s number one commuter capital is located in the middle of Bavaria. According to the Bavarian State Office, it is the capital of the south – München. More than 500,000 people commute to the city from out of town every day to work.

Munich is Germany’s number 1 commuter capital

With this huge number, Munich is well ahead of other German metropolises such as Frankfurt am Main with 445,000 commuters and Hamburg with 427,000. The Munich workers cover an average of 39 kilometers to their company. More than twice as much compared to other cities in Bavaria.

But the number of Munich residents who work outside of their city is also impressive. According to figures from the State Office, 222,000 people commute to work from Munich every day. That accounts for 15 percent of the population.

200 kilometers and more – some commuters travel long distances in Bavaria

Not everyone has a comparatively short distance to their place of work. According to information from the State Office, 14 percent of those employed in Bavaria live and work more than 50 kilometers apart. But it gets even harder.

Five percent of male commuters travel a distance of 200 kilometers or even more to reach their place of work. However, it cannot be said with certainty whether those affected commute daily or only on individual days. (With material from dpa)
