The city could fill more vacancies again in the coming year – that would also benefit the people of Munich. Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) wants to propose to the city council not to stick to the further reduction of the personnel budget planned for 2022. He also asked the administration to work out a proposal on how, to what extent and in which areas positions can be filled again, he announced on Friday. Above all, he wants to relieve the city employees where there is the greatest lack of staff and the citizen service needs to be improved quickly, said Reiter.
Treasurer Christoph Frey (SPD) expects the city to achieve an increase of 267 million euros in ongoing administrative activities this year – instead of the significant minus of 268 million euros originally expected. This is mainly due to the development in trade tax, which will probably bring in almost half a billion more than previously calculated. You are even heading towards an “all-time record result”, said Reiter. The current development shows that the Munich economy got through the crisis much better than expected.
In June, personnel officer Alexander Dietrich (CSU) had expected that up to 1200 positions could not be filled in 2022. “If the tax revenue continues to recover so steadily, it is our top priority to relieve the city workers,” said SPD parliamentary group leader Anne Huebner a few weeks ago. The “actual vacancy freeze” could then be ended. However, there is still a budget deficit, so you shouldn’t get cocky.
The Greens also want to “moderately adjust” the consolidation course, as parliamentary group leader Florian Roth said on Friday. “It must be possible to fill urgently needed positions again.” There is also a particular need in IT and education. In view of the planned new debt of 1.2 billion euros and the imminent “immense investments in the future”, one still has to “act financially with a sense of proportion,” said Roth.
