Munich is becoming an e-sports stronghold: Last weekend, the “League of Legends EMEA Championship” took place in the Olympiahalle. The finals were played over three days, and the event attracted more than 20,000 visitors. In the final, the favored team G2 Esports prevailed against FNATIC.
“League of Legends” is an online strategy game in which two teams of five players each compete against each other. The players control different heroes and must capture the opponent’s base to win. “League of Legends” is now one of the most popular video games in the world, and numerous foreign fans also traveled to the event in Munich.
Prestige project for the city of Munich
The state capital has pulled off a coup by hosting the event. Munich wanted to host the finals in 2021, but failed due to internal political disputes over subsidizing the event. Now Munich was the host for the first time and even allowed a public event at Odeonsplatz to promote exchange between gamers and citizens.
The organizers emphasized the good cooperation with the city, the Bavarian Digital Ministry spoke of a “flagship project” that would make Bavaria the “heart of e-sports and digitalization.”
