Munich Airport Approaches Pre-Corona Passenger Numbers, Reaches 80% Record Volume

MUNICH – Air traffic in Munich is rapidly approaching pre-Corona numbers. As the airport announced on Thursday, the number of passengers rose to 37 million last year – five million passengers or 17 percent more than the year before.

This means that “Munich Airport has achieved around 80 percent of the record volume from the pre-crisis year of 2019”.

The number of flight movements increased compared to 2022 by only six percent to more than 300,000 take-offs and landings. However, the planes are much fuller: “Seat occupancy reached a record high and, at 81.3 percent, was above 80 percent for the first time since the airport opened,” the airport said.

The hub is now connected to the global route network with 219 destinations in 64 countries. The number of people switching rose by 11 percent. The airport was regularly served by 99 airlines in 2023, nine of which were in cargo traffic.

Managing director Jost Lammers said: “The strong growth in passenger volumes in 2023 shows how well the aviation industry is recovering in Munich.” This shows the population and economy’s need for air travel. Air freight volumes rose by seven percent to 280,000 tons.
