The Munich Red Cross and the Munich volunteer fire brigade set up another acute care center for refugees from Ukraine within a few hours last night at Riesstrasse 34.

Volunteers from civil protection from the Munich Red Cross, Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund, Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe and Malteser Hilfsdienst are responsible for running the accommodation.

The volunteers from the Munich Red Cross and the Munich volunteer fire brigade worked late into the night on Wednesday to set up another emergency shelter for refugees from Ukraine in the vocational school center on Riesstraße on behalf of the City of Munich’s social department.

Hundreds of camp beds have been set up, the possibility of pre-registration by email has been created, food distribution stations have been set up, and rooms for medical care and Covid-19 tests have been upgraded. The capacity of the emergency shelter is about 300 places.

“The people who arrive here are tired and exhausted and had to leave their old lives behind in a very short time. As an aid organization, we want to help the Ukrainian refugees, like here in the emergency shelters, where they can get some rest for the first time,” emphasizes Jürgen Terstappen, head of operations at the BRK district association in Munich.

As in the emergency accommodation in the Luisengymnasium, the new accommodation is run by volunteers from the Munich aid organizations Munich Red Cross, Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund, Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe and Malteser Hilfsdienst. The volunteer interpreters also make an important contribution.

Every day, over 90 volunteers work in three shifts at the vocational school center on Riesstraße and at the Luisengymnasium to ensure around-the-clock care for the refugees. Volunteers will also take care of the Covid-19 tests.
