From 2023 Munich will start with a new team in the European League of Football (ELF). As the league announced on Wednesday, the Bavarian state capital is the 16th location and the last German access for the time being. This completes the circle for us on the map of Germany. Munich is a city with a great football tradition and many enthusiastic fans, ELF Managing Director Zeljko Karajica said in a statement.
This means that the expansion in Germany has been completed for the time being. Milan, Budapest and Zurich had previously been announced as the future locations of the continental league.
In the 2022 series, which has been running since June, twelve teams from five nations are fighting for a place in the playoffs. Berlin Thunder, the Hamburg Sea Devils, the current champion Frankfurt Galaxy, Rhein Fire, the Cologne Centurions, Stuttgart Surge and the Leipzig Kings are there as teams from Germany.
Eight nations will then be represented in the 2023 season. Our goal for the coming years is to play with 24 teams. It is important to emphasize that we are a European league, said Karajica. Commissioner Patrick Esume said that we are convinced that we will be able to present further attractive locations in the coming years.
Munich is hosting the first NFL game in Germany this year and will share four main round games in the world’s best football league with Frankfurt over the next four years. The game will be played in the Allianz Arena in Munich. Where the games of the new ELF team will be played was not announced on Wednesday.
