Munchausen Syndrome: Understanding the Psychological Disorder and Deceptive Behaviors

This is a factitious disorder that benefits oneself. Named after Karl Friedrich Hieronymus (known in Russia as “Baron Munchausen”), an 18th-century German nobleman famous for his fictional exploits. In medical practice, this term appeared in the middle of the 20th century, it means a psychological disorder characterized by the fact that a person seeks attention and sympathy by feigning (or exaggerating) physical symptoms or mental suffering.

People with Munchausen syndrome essentially deceive medical professionals and often change doctors and clinics in order to maintain the illusion of having a severe chronic disease. The motive for such behavior is usually a deep need for support, care and attention. It is now known that people with Munchausen syndrome can intentionally induce symptoms of the disease in themselves through self-harm, falsifying medical documents, or dangerous behavior.
