Three mummified bodies have been found in a remote forest area in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, the police say.
It was a hiker who discovered one of the bodies on Sunday.
He immediately alerted the authorities, who found two more bodies in a small tent when they investigated the site on Monday.
– Starving or freezing to death
The remains may have been there since last year. The police fear that the three people either starved or froze to death, writes British Sky News.
Disappeared from the same area: Unexplained
Personal belongings and a tarpaulin are said to have been found next to the bodies. The deceased probably also built a wooden structure by a campfire to seek shelter.
According to the police, the discovery was made in the forest – an area where hikers do not usually travel.
Struggling with identification
Gunnison County Sheriff Adam Murdie says there are no missing persons reported in the area. They are therefore struggling to identify the deceased.

Furthermore, the police chief believes that they may have been lying there for quite some time, considering the mummified state of the corpses.
– Either they froze to death in the winter, or it is a combination between hunger and cold, says Murdie about the cause of death.
It will take at least three weeks before the autopsy report is ready. The police are now trying to find out what the people did there, and why they were there.
