The images of Fokje Markerink-Van Keulen from the village of Neede have already gone through a first selection. Markerink grew up in Hengelo and has old images of playing in the street in the Klein Driene district, not long after the war. Jumping bucks, curbs and roller skating. “My old aunt Fok had filming and photography as a hobby,” she says. “I was surprised I still had those original videos.”
Fokje Markerink is very excited about Twente on Film, but it also makes her sad. “We were never bored in the past, always played outside. Now children play outside much less. And they sometimes don’t know what to do. Too bad.”
Gert and Hermien
Gerrit Stegeman from Notter, nowadays living in Deventer, filmed a multitude of events and themes in Twente from the early 1960s with a professional camera. He has a lot of historical material about Nijverdal in particular. He filmed Sinterklaas celebrations, but also, for example, a wedding where Gert and Hermien performed.
For the old film material, the initiators are now looking specifically for material from and with migrants in Twente. The Moluccan community in Nijverdal, Rijssen and Wierden, for example. But there is also no picture of Turkish labor migrants. The Syrian Orthodox community in Glane is another group whose old film material is still on the wish list of the initiators.
Images are good
Material about the nightlife in Twente is also very desirable. “And images of strikes, actions or demonstrations are very welcome. The images we have collected so far are generally good,” says Erik Willems.
Anyone who has images and wants to make them available can (also) visit the Museum Factory in Enschede next Wednesday. The ‘bring day’ lasts from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
