Multiple victims have been killed in a shooting at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. The suspect has died, police report.
At this time, there appear to be multiple victims, Las Vegas police said on X. In the statement, police did not elaborate on the circumstances of the incident or the status of the victims. It is also unclear exactly how many victims there were.
The police emphatically ask residents to avoid the area.
According to police, the incident took place around a Beam Hall building at the university. The university posted a message on social media calling on students to leave the area. About twenty minutes later, the university reported shots fired near the Student Union building.
The first rumors about the shooting surfaced early this afternoon (local time). Within about half an hour, Las Vegas police reported that the suspect had been located and deceased. Nothing is yet known about the identity and motive of the shooter. It is also still unclear how the suspect died.
The university will keep its doors closed for the rest of the day. Other universities in the American state of Nevada will also remain closed on Wednesday.
The University of Nevada is less than 2 miles east of the Las Vegas strip.
