Tragedy Strikes Suburban Minneapolis: Officers and Firefighter Killed in Shooting
Burnsville, Minnesota – A quiet suburban neighborhood in Burnsville, Minnesota, was shattered on Sunday as a man armed with multiple guns and large amounts of ammunition opened fire on police officers from inside his home. The horrifying incident resulted in the deaths of two officers and a firefighter who was providing medical aid to one of the wounded. The suspect also died during the exchange of gunfire.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent, Drew Evans, described the day as a “terrible” one, with details still being pieced together. The firefighter, who also worked as a paramedic, was shot while trying to assist an injured officer. According to reports, negotiations with the armed man lasted for several hours before he unleashed a hail of bullets. The standoff ended when the suspect was found dead around 8 a.m., allowing the safe release of his family and seven children ranging from 2 to 15 years old.
Superintendent Evans revealed that the suspect had barricaded himself in the home with his family. He was armed with several guns and fired at the police officers from different positions within the house. At least one officer was shot inside the home, and an exchange of gunfire occurred between the suspect and law enforcement. The exact sequence of events is yet to be determined.
The fallen heroes were identified as Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, both 27 years old, who were police officers, and Adam Finseth, a 40-year-old firefighter and paramedic. Elmstrand had been with the department since 2017 and served as a member of their mobile command staff, while Ruge joined in 2020 and was part of the crisis negotiations team. Another officer, Sgt. Adam Medlicott, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The community is in deep mourning following this devastating incident. Burnsville Police Chief Tanya Schwartz expressed the pain felt by the entire police force, describing the fallen officers and firefighter as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz ordered flags to be flown at half-staff and called upon the community to take a moment to honor the first responders who lost their lives.
A candlelit vigil was held in front of Burnsville City Hall to remember the victims, with hundreds of people in attendance. Uniformed officers from other departments, including those from St. Paul, joined the gathering to pay their respects. The vigil provided an opportunity for the community to come together, grieve, and support the grieving families. U.S. Representative Angie Craig expressed her condolences and gratitude towards all first responders, acknowledging the pain that everyone is experiencing.
