Multiple deaths from avalanches in French Alps | Abroad

The victims are between 42 and 72 years old and lived in Grenoble. Shortly afterwards, three hikers were buried under a mass of snow near the Grand Col glacier at Villaroger.

Most other hikers were found unharmed in the drama at the Col du Galibier. Investigations are still underway to ensure no other victims have been buried, local authorities said. Avalanche dogs and helicopters were used in the search.

The authorities warned Friday of increased avalanche danger due to the higher temperatures and previous heavy snowfalls in the Savoie region. Last Monday, five people had already died in avalanches in the regions of Isère and Hautes-Alpes.
