The motive of the shooter and the reason for the shooting is not yet known. Sheriff Douglas Mullendore of Washington County, which includes Smithsburg, said at a news conference that the 23-year-old gunman and the victims were all factory workers. He said the shooter used a semi-automatic pistol.
