Multiple Buses Stolen in Recent Robberies in Bronx Parking Lot

NEW YORK — Three buses were stolen from a parking lot in the Bronx, the NYPD said, after a similar incident over the weekend.

The robbery took place around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday in Blondell Avenue nearly Chesbrough Avenue in the neighborhood of Westchester Square, according to the police. Three or four suspects, all men, allegedly broke into the garage and fled with buses owned by Leesel Transportation.

Police had no further information about the robberies, although surveillance video showed how the group carried it out. A bus driver said the group left with three buses, each of which had the keys inside, he said, which is done in case the driver of the regularly scheduled bus can’t show up the next day. One of the suspects then rammed the door to remove the vehicles.

The driver suspected that the group took the buses for a ride. He added that the stolen buses were spares, so no students had their trip to school affected Tuesday morning.

According to the driver, a camera and GPS turn on automatically when the buses are running. The bus company manager said one of the vehicles had been recovered after being abandoned outside a school in Crotona Park. There was another bus that the company manager believed was still in the hands of the suspect, as he GPS showed traveling in Springfield Gardens, Queens.

The incident comes after a school bus was also stolen at the same location on Sunday morning. It was not immediately clear if the same group is behind both incidents.

No arrests have been made in either case, as police are still searching for the suspected thieves. Investigations are ongoing.
