At least ten ATMs in The Hague have recently been attacked by criminals. According to the police, a so-called ‘cash trap’ has been placed. This means that the money remains stuck in the machine after the pin has been withdrawn.

Because the money remains stuck, the machine malfunctions, the police wrote Facebook. The criminals return at a later time to remove the cash trap from the machine and run off with the money.

The ten ATMs where this happened were all in the center of The Hague.

Not completely new

People are urged to be extra careful when using their debit card and to call the police if they are not confident about something. An investigation has been launched into the ten cash traps that have already been found.

The police speak of a new form of fraud, but the trick is not completely new. Last year, in Tilburg, among other places, a man who placed a cash trap was captured on camera images. The trick was also used at ATMs in Zwolle last year.
