Multiple accidents due to slipperiness on highways A1 and A50 | Car

UPDATEThis morning the KNMI issued a code yellow for the north and east of the Netherlands due to ice. Code orange applied to Gelderland. Rain in combination with frost on the ground caused slippery conditions. Accidents occurred in several places.

The morning starts quite cold in the north and east with temperatures below freezing, also says Weerplaza. The risk of accidents was high, the warning read. Especially in the south of the Veluwe and around Arnhem and Doetinchem it could be locally ‘treacherous slippery’ due to rain and frost.

On the A1 and A50 in the east of the country there were therefore several accidents due to the ice, reports Rijkswaterstaat. There was only damage to the can, says a spokeswoman for the Rijkswaterstaat. During the morning the temperature rose. ‘The slipperiness had disappeared around 10 a.m.’, according to Rijkswaterstaat.

First moderate frost

Tonight was the first local moderate frost a fact this winter at an official KNMI measuring point. The mercury at the weather station in Eelde eventually dropped to -6.6 degrees. The fact that the temperature is now dropping below minus 5 is due to the current climate according to the meteorologists ‘on time’.

Today, on average, in mid-December, there is moderate freezing for the first time in the winter season. In the winter of 2019-2020, the temperature did not drop below -5 degrees for the first time anywhere in the country until January 21. The earliest date on which moderate frost occurred in our country was October 7, 1912.

Persistent clouds

Coming afternoon it will be mostly dry everywhere with cloud fields, but also with some sun at a maximum of 4 to 7 degrees. In the evening it will become cloudy and rain will follow from the west. During the night it rains everywhere. On Sunday the rain will disappear and it will be quite mild with 10 to 12 degrees.

With high pressure areas in our area, the rest of the week will be mostly dry and calm weather. The clouds remain persistent and the sun only shows itself at ‘sparing moments’, according to Weerplaza. Initially it will be mild at around ten degrees, but later in the week the temperature will drop again.

Even during the nights, the mercury remains well above zero for the time being. We are, however, on the edge of a high-pressure area, which means that disturbances occasionally reach our country. From Tuesday there is a chance of a few showers. Yet it remains quite mild, with a maximum of 9 degrees.
