A series of collisions left one person dead and another seriously injured on a busy East Valley highway early Sunday morning.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety says the crashes occurred around 3 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Loop 202 Red Mountain, adjacent to the Scottsdale Road exit ramp.
CLOSED: L-202 Red Mountain WB is closed at Loop 101 Pima. The closure is due to a crash near Scottsdale Road.

Deputies say a white car rear-ended a gray Honda SUV, causing the SUV to block lanes of the highway. According to DPS, a gray Audi then collided with the SUV.
These vehicles were then struck by a gray Ford passenger vehicle, which also struck two people from the earlier crashes who were standing outside their cars.
One person died as a result of the third crash and another is in critical condition. The victim has not been identified.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the highway is closed from Scottsdale Road to Loop 101 Pima Road.
There is no estimated time to reopen the highway. Drivers are asked to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
