New York City saw high turnout in early voting for the 2024 general election, following the general trend.
NEW YORK, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) — New York City saw a large number of early voters for the 2024 general election, following the general trend.
As polls closed Sunday, 257,860 New Yorkers had voted in the first two days of early voting for 2024, which began Saturday, according to data released by the New York Office of Elections.
The first day of early voting collected 140,145 ballots, almost 50,000 more than those cast on the first day of 2020.
In some polling stations, voters waited up to 40 to 50 minutes before they could vote.
Voting in New York’s Onondaga, Oneida, Madison, Cayuga and Cortland counties saw an increase in voting early Saturday.
As of Sunday afternoon, the United States had counted 41.26 million early votes, including more than 20 million in-person and mail-in votes, according to data released by the University of Florida Election Lab.
Republicans’ shift from encouraging supporters to early voting after opposing early voting four years ago is seen as a key factor in the increase in early voting this year.
The 2024 US presidential election is scheduled for November 5.
