– The official part of the meeting of the Polish and Hungarian prime ministers has just ended. The meeting concerned the preparations for the next meeting of the European Council #EUCOwhich will be held in mid-December – said the government spokesman.
– The topics of the conversation concerned, among others, the coordination of positions in the field of budget negotiations. The position of Poland and Hungary is clear. We expect the German presidency to receive a proposal in this regard, he added
– As for the remaining topics, the upcoming European Council meeting will mainly focus on climate issues. This topic and the coordination of group activities # V4 in this regard, it was also the subject of the meeting of prime ministers, emphasized Müller.
– When it comes to EU negotiations, we are open to new proposals and convinced that an agreement can be reached, but it must be consistent with the EU treaties and the decisions of the European Council in July – emphasized the politician.
– We convince our partners that the arbitrary criteria for assessing the rule of law in individual countries may lead to the collapse of the European Union in the future – he warned.
Müller said the meeting lasted about 1.5 hours.
Morawiecki’s meeting with Orban in Warsaw
This evening in Warsaw a working meeting between Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was held; subject – incl. discussion of further actions in the context of budget negotiations in the EU – said the government spokesman Piotr Müller in the afternoon.
– Today’s working meeting aims, inter alia, at discussing further actions in the context of the EU budget negotiations and the upcoming European Council summit – added the government spokesman.
As he stated, “there is no official proposal of the European Commission, and only backstage discussions are taking place in the EU.” – They are not public, so I do not want to comment on it. We hear about countries that raise objections to the rule of law mechanism, such as Slovenia or Portugal, Müller said at a press conference.
However, the Portuguese government maintains its support for the rule of law in the EUFor several months, Prime Minister Antonio Costa has been trying to ensure that the dependence of the EU budget on the rule of law does not delay payments from the fund, which is to serve the recovery of EU countries after the pandemic.
EU Member States did not reach unanimity on the EU’s multiannual budget for 2021-2027 and the decisions on the reconstruction fund. Poland and Hungary raised objections in relation to the regulation linking access to EU funds with the rule of law. At a meeting of EU ambassadors, the regulation was adopted by a qualified majority of member states.
