MUI Chair Disgusted Seeing Defendant Sudden with Religious Attribute During Session

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) The Da’wah sector, Cholil Nafis, opens his voice regarding the polemic of the defendant’s prohibition of wearing religious attributes during the trial.

He admitted that he agreed with Attorney General ST Burhanuddin’s policy of prohibiting defendants from suddenly wearing religious attributes that had never been used before in court.

“Agreed, the Attorney General of the Republic of Indonesia. I used to wonder why the defendant went to trial dressed suddenly as a pious person,” wrote Cholil through his personal twitter account (@cholilnafis), last Friday (13/5).

Cholil also admitted that he was uncomfortable when he saw the symbols of Muslim clothes worn by criminals.

According to him, the clothes worn by the accused are usually easily recognizable clothes. Especially for the defendants in corruption cases.

“In fact, it feels uncomfortable to see the clothes symbolizing Muslim wear. I support the defendant’s special clothes that are easily recognizable, especially corruptors,” he concluded.

Previously, Burhanuddin prohibited defendants from suddenly wearing religious attributes during the trial. Not only that, he also forbade the prosecutor to bring the defendant to trial.

This is done so that there is no thought in the community that religious attributes are used by criminals only at certain times.

One example of a defendant who suddenly became pious by wearing a hijab during a trial was former Pinangki Prosecutor Sirna Malasari. He was caught in the bribery case of Djoko Tjandra.

During the trial Pinangki wore a hijab and a robe, even though during the investigation and examination he did not wear such clothes.

Then when he was executed at the Tangerang Women’s Correctional Institution, Pinangki no longer wore the hijab. Her hair is clearly visible in the photo shared by prosecutors some time ago.
