It is one of the election promises that should be kept, explains Marius Schwabe, parliamentary group leader of the Mühlheim CDU, the application of the alliance for Mühlheim made up of Greens, Christian Democrats, citizens for Mühlheim and FDP. Further positions are to be created in the regulatory police. However, the application still has to be accepted at the next city council meeting.
Mühlheim – Because the law enforcement officers have a lot to do at the moment: In addition to patrols over the weekly market and in the local recreation area, the range of tasks also includes monitoring traffic, punishing parking offenders and environmental offenders as well as checking the city’s own statutes. The corona pandemic, which has been going on for over a year, then brought a bunch of additional tasks. Now, in addition to compliance with the mask requirement, the regulatory police also have to monitor the hygiene requirements in the shops. A lot to do for the six men and women in the service of the city of Mühlheim.
“There were certainly many tasks left behind due to the pandemic,” said Schwabe, “which is why more positions are needed to lift the load.” Dr. Alexander Krey sees the burden since the beginning of the pandemic as very great: “People are now more at home and therefore turn to us more often because, for example, there is a lot of wrong parking, but we cannot always help out because there is not enough capacity last year, the six police officers recorded 2329 violations in stationary traffic and 8554 violations in flowing traffic.
How many positions are actually needed is still unclear
Schwabe is not yet able to say how many positions there should be. In the end, the magistrate has to decide how high the need is, “but two more positions would, in my opinion, probably be good.” Alexander Krey also considers an increase by two more First, ask for the best solution: “In the end, that also costs taxpayers’ money and that’s why I am in favor of creating two additional positions and then seeing whether it fits or whether you need more strength.”
Specifically, the alliance is aiming with its application that the shifts of the order police are expanded in such a way “that they can in future also be deployed regularly on weekends and, in principle, are operational from at least 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.”
For Schwabe, the main concern of the application is that the law enforcement officers can show more presence and are the contact persons for the citizens: “It gives people more security and ultimately you can only punish offenses if you are also there . “
Six police officers plus ten volunteers on duty
It is of no use if the administration introduces new bans, such as a truck ban on certain streets, but then does not have this checked, says the 42-year-old full-time lawyer. The police are currently on duty from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and until 1 p.m. on Saturdays. According to Krey, more staff is required, especially at the weekend: “In the summer, many foreigners come to the Main meadows or the local recreation area.” Often, people swim there forbidden. Another reason for more staff is that the law enforcement officers are only on the move in teams of two. For self-protection, because stones have already been thrown at her in the local recreation area.
In addition to the six police officers, ten volunteer police helpers are also on duty in Mühlenstadt. But these have no enforcement powers and their presence ensures a subjective feeling of security and serves as a contact for the citizens, according to City Councilor Krey. (By Lukas Reus)
