Muguruza combines love for New York with good results at US Open

Garbine Muguruza likes to play tennis in New York, although she did not radiate that with her results at the US Open in recent years. After a nice fight with three-time finalist Viktoria Azarenka, the Spanish is now in the fourth round, equaling her best performance ever.

Muguruza, who won Roland Garros in 2016 and Wimbledon a year later, came out on top with 6-4, 3-6 and 6-2. “This year it’s been working for me so far so I just want to keep going,” she said after the hard-fought win.

In the first set Muguruza’s hard, flat blows were decisive, in the second the hard returns of Azarenka. In the decisive company, the first service of the Belarusian faltered, and Muguruza successfully attacked the second serve.

Halep shows character

Former number one in the world Simona Halep also had a hard time against Jelena Rybakina, but eventually won her exciting three-setter. The Romanian won 7-6 (11), 4-6, 6-3.
