Pablo Muentes, former member of the National Assembly, faces accusations related to the Purga case, a legal process that investigates organized crime crimes in Ecuador. Although he is not one of the 52 defendants in the Metastasis case, his name came up during the anticipated testimony of Mayra Salazar, a communicator linked to the case.
According to Salazar’s account before the National Court of Justice, Muentes would have been involved in negotiations of cleaning contracts for judicial offices in Guayaquil and the province of Guayas. These contracts were withdrawn by María Josefa Coronel, then director of the Judiciary Council in Guayas, which generated conflicts and attacks, according to Salazar.
The communicator mentioned the existence of “troll” accounts controlled by her that apparently defended Muentes by attacking people with whom she had problems, such as Ricardo Noboa Bejarano, lawyer for Banco del Pacífico, María Josefa Coronel, and the journalist Guillermo Lizarzaburu. In his communications, Muentes was registered under different names, such as “Pablito” and “Geremy Morton New.”
Salazar stated that Muentes benefited from cleaning contracts through associations linked to him, which, according to her, negatively affected judicial officials and users of the justice system. He also mentioned that an investigation into these contracts had been initiated in the province of Guayas, but was transferred to Babahoyo, in Los Ríos, in a “mysterious” manner, which raises questions about the integrity of the investigation process..
Salazar’s testimony points to a series of irregularities and alleged corrupt practices in relation to cleaning contracts in the judicial system, where the figure of Muentes appears to be at the center of a network of influence and possible manipulation of public contracts in Ecuador.
