Even during her second start at Wimbledon, tennis player Karolína Muchová reached the quarterfinals. While the year before last she was excited about the grand slam premiere among the top eight, she is now more experienced and doesn’t want to finish yet.
In Muchová, London radiates well-being resulting from the joy of playing on the grass. “I enjoy everything. I like everything here. I like the club, the people in it. I’m glad I’m in the quarterfinals again and I’ll try to go even further,” she said after winning the eighth finals over the Spanish Paula Badosa.
In the match of the third round, she felt bad about her game, this time she felt better. Despite the worse introduction, she mostly determined the pace of the game. “When I needed to get a balloon there, play a longer exchange and make it a mistake, I was able to. There are more positives, there was better movement,” she said.
The year before, she was excited about advancing to the Wimbledon quarterfinals. “I had my head in the clouds,” she recalled. Since then, she has reached the second week of the grand slam at the US Open last year and especially this year in Melbourne, where she even played the semifinals at the Australian Open.
Maybe that’s why she now took advancing to the Wimbledon quarterfinals a bit as a duty, as she herself said. “It’s weird to say that. I don’t know how to put it. Maybe we said it wrong,” she said, trying to explain that she was a higher-ranking player against Badosa. “So I wanted to get to the quarterfinals,” added the 24-year-old native of Olomouc.
From the point of view of placement, it will be better in the fight for the semifinals with Angelique Kerberová. But the German is already a three-time grand slam champion and winner of Wimbledon from 2018. “She can do it on the grass, so I have a big fight ahead of me,” she said. She lost to Kerberus twice the year before on a hard surface. “I had the impression that he was everywhere. He would not give up any exchange,” Muchova said.
The fact that Kerber is left-handed will also be unpleasant. “I’m sure he writes mainly on the service, that’s the biggest advantage. If he throws a good slice there, I have a backhand there,” said Muchová, who has a 9:12 balance with the left-handed players. This year, in Paris, one of them defeated Varvara Lepchenková from the USA.
Quarterfinal matches will take place on the two main courts of Wimbledon. “A lot of people come here, they support a lot and that’s really great. It’s really nice here,” Muchová looked forward to the atmosphere.
