Much higher prison sentence for death mover Julie (20): ‘She does not see the seriousness of the case’ | Inland

P. died on Sunday morning 9 September 2018 in the Straatsburglaan in Sittard Julie Hoofwijk and left her on the street. After the collision, she bumped into several parked cars and drove home. All of this happened under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

The Limburg court imposed a sentence of 12 months in prison on the woman on 19 November 2019, six of which were suspended. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) appealed.

P. maintained at that session that despite her drinking and drug use, she could still drive fine, even though she had not slept for days and had eaten badly. According to her, the accident would have happened if she had been sober. The Court of Appeal blamed her for this statement: “With this statement, the accused demonstrates that she does not sufficiently understand the seriousness and evil of her actions, despite her regret,” the verdict said.

Unlike the court in Limburg, the court sees a higher degree of guilt and therefore comes to a higher sentence.

P. should have seen Julie, according to the Court: ‘The suspect did not evade and did not brake. She went on her way without worrying about the possible victims. ‘

Much sadness

“The suffering caused to the family by Julie’s death is indescribably great and irreparable,” the Court ruled. The parents’ victim statements have made it painfully clear how they suffer from this loss. In addition, a lot of grief has also been caused by other family members, friends and fellow students. The actions of the suspect have changed lives drastically and permanently. The court considers this to be a heavy burden for P. ‘

The court previously found that the woman had to pay a total of 20,000 euros in compensation to the parents and brothers of the victim. The court finds that the next of kin are all entitled to the fully submitted claim for compensation for shock damage. On appeal, the total compensation therefore amounts to 70,000 euros.
