MTN Cameroon staff trained in sign language

This initiative is in addition to another ongoing program for the training of 130 people living with disabilities in computer graphics and web development in 3 regions of the country.

MTN Cameroon shows solidarity with people living with disabilities. The telecommunications operator showed its commitment to these people on the occasion of the International Week of Deaf People, from September 18 to 23, and the International Day of Sign Languages, on September 23, 2023.

To allow equitable access to its services for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, the company has set up a training program for its agents in sign languages. The trained personnel were thus presented to the general public and also received their training certificates during a ceremony at the MTN Akwa agency in Douala. “ This training allowed me to deal with and communicate more adequately with deaf or hard of hearing clients in order to offer them the best services. It also helped me to better accept the differences around me, because they can enrich me. It was such a great experience. I would like to express my gratitude to MTN », rejoices Nancy Diboti, a learner.

Through this training of some of its agents, MTN Cameroon intends to satisfy disabled people in contact with its premises. “ It is important that all our customers whatever their conditions are entitled to a quality experience, regardless of the channel through which we interact with them. It is with this in mind that we train the employees of our agencies in sign languages. », indicated Marie-Rose Daya, General Manager Customer experience.

MTN Cameroon’s approach is not limited to the training of its agents. The company has also dedicated a line to support visually impaired and blind people. A tool available since last July via WhatsApp. At the same time, 130 people living with disabilities are receiving training in computer graphics and web development in 3 regions of the country. There are also around twenty within the Digital Academy, which the MTN Foundation organizes in partnership with the African Institute of Informatics.

All these initiatives are an integral part of MTN Cameroon’s social responsibility strategy. The local subsidiary of the South African giant is committed to supporting sustainable development, reducing inequalities and promoting inclusion. “ Our approach to inclusion recommends that we pay particular attention to the most disadvantaged social groups, where we include young people, women, refugees and people living with disabilities. For the latter group, we are rolling out initiatives to improve their access to our premises, our communications, our products and services and our training and employment opportunities. ,” recalled Melvin Akam, General Manager Regulatory and Corporate Affairs.

It must be said that MTN Cameroon also ensures that people living with disabilities have access to its job opportunities.
