NEW YORK – The MTA will install security cameras in all New York City subway cars, one of the latest measures to deter crime and improve safety in the subway system, Governor Kathy announced Tuesday.

The installation of the cameras will be in the entire fleet of subway cars, according to the governor.

Approximately $ 5.5 million will go to the security camera floor, with $ 2 million coming from the Urban Area Security Initiative, a federal program under the Department of States Homeland Security Readiness Grants United, while the remaining $ 3.5 million will come from the MTA.

The pilot program has so far deployed cameras on the following lines: 2,4,5,6 E, F, M, G and R.

According to statistics, violent crime on the subway system increased by almost 57% in July compared to the same period the previous year. These figures do not take into account the possible impact of the reduction in the number of passengers post-pandemic.
